The most common uses of the internet among Australians are to access a government service (93%), manage money (93%), keep in touch with family and friends (92.9%), and compare the prices of products and services (90.2%).

While overall use declines with age, most Australians (no matter their age) use the internet for these common purposes and others, including booking medical appointments and accessing health services, using entertainment services, navigating routes via maps with a smartphone, buying and selling goods online, and tracking the progress of a delivery.

The easing of measures taken in 2020 and 2021 to curb the spread of COVID-19 are starting to be seen in the 2023 results. There have been declines in the use of the internet to feel connected to a community, to keep in touch with family and friends, and to attend music, arts, or cultural events. These declines in the use of the internet for these purposes are particularly pronounced among older Australians, reflecting a return to connecting with friends, family, communities, and culture in person.
